Gianni De Stefano took on the role of Director Global Competition Law at AkzoNobel in 2018 after over a decade as an antitrust lawyer in International leading law firms. He is currently based in Brussels & Amsterdam.
His practical tasks include: managing the global compliance framework of AkzoNobel (from training the company leaders and employees to coordinating the internal audits); dealing with the competition aspects of mergers & acquisitions (from merger control filings and foreign investment filings to post-closing integration work); leading the Competition Law Regional Group which includes the regional legal directors of the company; and offering expert advice (not only defending the business before the authorities and courts, but also identifying opportunities such as efficient distribution models or damages claims vis-à-vis business partners).
Throughout the years Mr De Stefano has been managing global teams for in-depth (Phase 2) merger cases (including the General Electric/Alstom Energy case, which include filings in over 30 jurisdictions) as well as some of the most complex global cartel investigations (Air Cargo, Automotive, Batteries, Video Tapes, and Smart Card Semiconductors).
Mr De Stefano is a Non-Governmental Advisor to the European Commission within the International Competition Network and a General Editor of the Journal of European Competition Law & Practice (at Oxford University Press).
